The route
There is no direct trail. Trekkers walk back from Base Camp to Gorak Shep, then climb the steep slope of Kala Patthar the next day or in the afternoon for the best close view of Everest.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Go early for clear skies and calmer wind, or late for sunset. Bring layers, gloves and a headlamp.
Common questions
- Can I visit both in one day? Some fit trekkers do, but most split them across two mornings to stay safer.
- Why Kala Patthar? It offers the best view of Everest, which is mostly hidden at Base Camp. See the Kala Patthar guide.
Reverse direction
Walking Kala Patthar to Everest Base Camp is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
