The route
The trail climbs to Dughla, where it meets the route from Pheriche, then climbs the steep moraine of the Khumbu Glacier past memorials to climbers at Chukpo Lari before descending slightly to Lobuche.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Take it slowly. The sleeping altitude at Lobuche is high enough that headaches and poor sleep are common. See the Dingboche acclimatisation guide.
Common questions
- What is at Chukpo Lari? A ridge with memorials to climbers who died on Everest and nearby peaks.
- Do I need a rest day before Lobuche? Most plans include one at Dingboche or Pheriche for acclimatisation.
Reverse direction
Walking Lobuche to Dingboche is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
