The route
The trail follows the Khumbu Glacier moraine over rocks and ice with many small ups and downs. Everest itself is hidden by Nuptse for most of the walk, and the base camp is a stretch of rubble on the glacier.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Go early for calmer weather, carry water and layers, and be ready to turn around if you feel unwell. Many trekkers combine Base Camp and Kala Patthar on separate mornings.
Common questions
- Can I see Everest from Base Camp? Not really. Everest is mostly hidden. Kala Patthar gives the best view.
- Is it a one-day trip from Gorak Shep? Yes, normally as a return trip of around 6 to 8 hours including time at the camp.
Reverse direction
Walking Everest Base Camp to Gorak Shep is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
