The route
The trail follows the Dudh Koshi through Toktok and Benkar, crossing suspension bridges and passing mani walls. Monjo is the last village before the Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Take the bridges one group at a time, and keep to the mountain side of the trail when yaks and porters pass.
Common questions
- Where is the national park gate? Just beyond Monjo, where permits are checked before the climb to Namche.
- Is Monjo a good stop? Many groups stop here the night before the big climb to Namche, which keeps the next day shorter.
Reverse direction
Walking Monjo to Phakding is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
