The route
From Khumjung the trail contours across the hillside, drops through forest to the Dudh Koshi near Phunki Tenga and then climbs steeply to the Tengboche monastery. The gain looks small, but the drop and climb take real effort.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Allow plenty of time for the final climb. Afternoon cloud often covers the view, so a morning start helps.
Common questions
- Is the net gain small? Yes, but the descent to the river and the climb up again make the day harder than it looks.
- Can I do this without going back to Namche? Yes. This route links Khumjung directly to the main trail.
Reverse direction
Walking Tengboche to Khumjung is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
