The route
The trail climbs gently along the valley, through yak pastures and past the Pheriche junction. It enters the wide, open valley of Dingboche, ringed by stone walls and fields.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Dingboche is where most itineraries add a rest day. See the Dingboche acclimatisation guide.
Common questions
- Is Dingboche high? At about 4,410 m, yes. Altitude sickness is possible, so go slowly.
- Do I have to stop at Dingboche? Most itineraries do, because it is a standard acclimatisation stop.
Reverse direction
Walking Dingboche to Pangboche is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
