Hiunchuli is a 6,441 m trekking peak in the Annapurna Sanctuary. It stands above the Modi Khola valley, in front of Annapurna South, and is regarded as one of the harder trekking peaks because of its steep slopes and exposure.
Where it stands
The mountain is on the western side of the sanctuary and rises directly above the trail. The height is 6,441 m (21,132 ft). It makes a dramatic sight on the final stretch to Annapurna Base Camp.
Why it is considered hard
The slopes are steep, the ridge is narrow, and the weather can turn quickly. It is a trekking peak in name, but the climb needs real mountaineering ability.
Preparation
Previous experience on a trekking peak such as Island Peak is a good foundation. Practise with ropes and crampons. Fitness should be high.
Approach
The approach follows the standard Annapurna Base Camp trail to the sanctuary, then branches to a high camp.
Season
Autumn and spring, with colder temperatures in autumn.
Planning
Combine it with a trek to Annapurna Base Camp. See the Annapurna Base Camp guides and Singu Chuli.
Common questions
Is Hiunchuli higher than Singu Chuli? No, it is lower. Is it the same as Putha Hiunchuli? No, that is a different mountain in the Dhaulagiri area.
A mountain seen by everyone
Nearly every trekker who goes to Annapurna Base Camp sees Hiunchuli, but few climb it. The mountain rises above the trail near the start of the sanctuary and remains in view for much of the walk. Its sharp ridge looks inviting but is more serious than it appears.
Gear and training
Because the climb is steep, good crampon skills are important. Practise on an ice slope before you go. Bring warm clothing, because summit day starts early in the cold.
Alternatives if conditions are poor
If snow conditions are unsafe, your guide may suggest a different objective, such as Tent Peak. Flexibility is part of mountaineering.
Cultural note
The Annapurna Sanctuary is a sacred place for the Gurung people, and Machhapuchhre is regarded as sacred and is not climbed. Respect local customs on the trail.
More questions
Can I climb it in one day from base camp? No, most teams use a high camp. Is it suitable for a first peak? Not usually. Is it far from Annapurna Base Camp? It is on the same side of the sanctuary, within a day or two of the camp.
