Khumbutse: the first mountain west of Everest

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Khumbutse is a 6,640 m peak on the border between Nepal and Tibet, standing at the head of the Khumbu glacier just west of Everest. It is the mountain closest to the Khumbu Icefall on that side, and it is part of the wall that forms the end of the valley.

At the head of the valley

Khumbutse stands on the far side of the Khumbu glacier, where the valley turns towards the Western Cwm. The height is 6,640 m (21,780 ft). It forms part of the high border ridge that includes Lingtren and Pumori.

Seen from the trail

Trekkers see it from Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar as a rounded peak on the left of the view towards Everest. It is easy to miss, because Pumori and Nuptse draw the eye, so ask your guide to point it out.

Why it matters

The mountain marks the beginning of the high ridge leading to the Lho La, a pass on the Tibetan border. Its position helps you to understand the shape of the Everest area, with the Khumbu glacier below and the border wall above.

Climbing

Khumbutse is an alpine objective that requires an expedition permit. It sees few visits, and conditions can be harsh. It is not a standard commercial peak.

Respecting the border

This mountain stands on the frontier, so approaches near the ridge may be restricted. Keep to marked trails and follow your guide.

Common questions

Is Khumbutse part of Everest? No, it is a separate mountain. Can I see it from Base Camp? Parts of it, yes, from Gorak Shep more clearly. Is it a trekking peak? No.

How the Khumbu glacier shapes the view

The Khumbu glacier begins high on the slopes of Everest and flows slowly down the valley. Khumbutse stands at the end of this valley and helps to define its shape. Understanding where the ice comes from and where it goes makes the walk to Gorak Shep feel like a journey through a landscape with a story.

Tell the peaks apart

From Gorak Shep, look for the long dark wall of Nuptse, then for the pointed white pyramid of Pumori. Khumbutse is the rounded white mass further along the border ridge, and Lingtren sits close in front of Pumori. Ask your guide to confirm each one, and you will soon be able to name most of the peaks around you.

Stories of the Lho La

The pass between Khumbutse and Pumori, the Lho La, has been used in expedition history to approach Everest from the Tibetan side. It is not a trekking route, but it is an important part of the mountain story, and guides sometimes tell tales about it in the evening at Gorak Shep.

Why it is worth naming

It is easy to let the lower peaks blur together when the biggest mountain is in sight. Naming each one gives your trip more depth, and it helps you to remember the day. Khumbutse deserves a mention.
