Kongde Ri is a 6,187 m peak that rises above Thame and the Namche side of the Khumbu. It is classified as a difficult trekking peak and is quieter than the better-known climbs, which makes it attractive for people who want a challenge without the crowds.
Quiet corner of the Khumbu
The mountain sits on the western side of the Dudh Kosi, above the village of Thame and the route towards the Tibetan border. This is the old trade route to Nangpa La, and the valleys here are quiet, with traditional Sherpa villages and monasteries.
Height and classification
The height is about 6,187 m (20,299 ft). It is listed among the trekking peaks, and like Kusum Kangguru it is considered one of the harder ones. Steep snow and ice, and a long summit day, are part of the experience.
Why people choose it
Kongde Ri offers big mountain views without queues. From the top you see Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and the long wall of the Gokyo side. It also gives a chance to experience Thame and the western valleys, which most visitors skip.
The climb
Climbers normally set up a base camp and a high camp, then climb a snow ridge to the summit. The final section is steep, and weather can change quickly. A rope team and a competent guide are needed.
Acclimatisation
Spend at least two nights at Namche and another at Thame, with a day hike to higher ground. A few nights above 4,500 m before the climb will help.
Planning
Combine the climb with a trek to Thame, Renjo La and Gokyo if you have extra days. See the Gokyo Lakes guide for the neighbouring valley.
Common questions
Is Kongde Ri easy? No. Do I need a permit? Yes, a trekking peak permit arranged through an agency. When is the best time? October, November, April and May.
Thame and the western valleys
The village of Thame is the home of several well-known mountaineers, and it keeps a calm, traditional character. A monastery perches on the hillside above the village, and old trade routes lead north towards the Nangpa La. A day or two spent here before the climb helps with acclimatisation and gives a feel for the culture of the area.
Gear list essentials
Bring layered clothing, a warm sleeping bag, mountaineering boots, crampons, an ice axe and a harness. Ask us for a full gear list and advice on renting items in Namche Bazaar, which has several shops.
Safety
Weather can change fast, and the snow on the upper slopes may be unstable after fresh snowfall. Always follow your guide, and be ready to turn back.
A route with a view
The summit gives a long panorama of the Khumbu peaks and a sense of the empty valleys on the Tibetan side. Many climbers say that the peace and quiet are as memorable as the view.
More questions
How long does the climb take? The climb itself is a few days, but the whole trip needs two to three weeks with acclimatisation. Can I climb Kongde Ri and also visit Everest Base Camp? Yes, but the combination needs careful planning and extra days.
