The route
The usual descent returns to High Camp, then to Low Camp and down through forest to Siding, a village where jeeps wait. The descent is long and hard on the knees.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Poles help on the steep sections. Check your transport to Pokhara in advance.
Common questions
- Is Siding on a road? Yes, vehicles can reach it.
- How long is the descent? Usually one to two days, depending on where you stop.
Reverse direction
Walking Siding to Mardi Himal Base Camp is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
