The route
The usual route descends stone steps through Ulleri and Tikhedhunga to Birethanti and Nayapul, then a drive back to Pokhara. The long descent is hard on the knees.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Poles help a lot on the steps. Check bus and taxi times at Nayapul in advance.
Common questions
- Is there a quicker route? Some groups go from Ghorepani via Ghandruk and a jeep.
- Where does the trek end? Most itineraries end at Nayapul, with a road transfer to Pokhara.
Reverse direction
Walking Pokhara to Ghorepani is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
