The route
A long drive on the Prithvi Highway and then the rough road via Dhading Besi and Arughat to Soti Khola. The last section is bumpy.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Start early. A 4x4 vehicle is usually needed for the final part of the road.
Common questions
- Is it a long drive? Yes, it is a full day.
- Is the road rough? The final stretch beyond Arughat can be rough, especially in the rains.
Reverse direction
Walking Soti Khola to Kathmandu is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
