The route
The trail crosses to the west bank, climbs over a ridge, passes Philim and enters a narrow gorge before reaching Deng. The valley is steep and forested.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Check your permits at the checkpost near Philim. The gorge can have landslides after rain.
Common questions
- Where are permits checked? At Jagat and other points along the route.
- Is the gorge safe? In dry weather, yes, but the trail can be damaged after rain.
Reverse direction
Walking Deng to Jagat is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
