The route
The trail crosses the river several times, climbs through bamboo and rhododendron forest and passes Bihi Phedi and Ghap. Namrung is the first village with Tibetan-style houses.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
It is a long, steady climb. Carry water and snacks. Namrung has a checkpost for the restricted area.
Common questions
- Is Namrung Tibetan? Yes. The people are Tibetan-influenced and the houses are stone, with prayer wheels.
- Is this a long day? Yes. Allow most of the day.
Reverse direction
Walking Namrung to Deng is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
