The path continues through Shyala and across high pastures, with views of Manaslu and Himalchuli. Samagaun is the largest village in the upper valley and has a monastery.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Plan a rest day here. Visit Pungyen Gompa or Manaslu Base Camp for acclimatisation.
Common questions
- Is a rest day needed? Yes, most itineraries include one.
- What can I do in Samagaun? Day hikes to Pungyen Gompa or Manaslu Base Camp.
Reverse direction
Walking Samagaun to Lho is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
