The route
From Samdo the trail climbs over the moraine of the Salka glacier and up to Dharamsala (also called Larkya Phedi), a basic stone hut with a few rooms at the foot of the Larkya La pass.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Lodging is basic and can get crowded in season. Sleep as well as you can, because the pass day starts very early.
Common questions
- What is Dharamsala? A stone lodge at the foot of the pass, with simple rooms. It is also called Larkya Phedi.
- How high is Larkya La? The pass is about 5,100 m, reached the next morning.
Reverse direction
Walking Dharamsala to Samdo is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
