The route
A steep descent over scree, moraine and then grassy slopes beside the Bimthang glacier. The valley opens out to the wide plain of Bimthang.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
The descent is hard on the knees. Poles help. The pass day is often 8 to 10 hours in total from Dharamsala.
Common questions
- Is the descent steep? Yes, especially the upper part.
- What is Bimthang? A wide high valley with a few lodges and views of Manaslu.
Reverse direction
Walking Bimthang to Larkya La Pass is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
