The route
A drive west along the Prithvi Highway and then up the Marsyangdi valley. Buses, tourist buses and private jeeps run the route.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Start early to avoid traffic leaving Kathmandu. A private vehicle gives more flexibility for stops.
Common questions
- Is Besisahar the start? It was the traditional start, though the road now goes further.
- Can I go by bus? Yes, public and tourist buses run daily.
Reverse direction
Walking Besisahar to Kathmandu is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
