The route
The trail crosses the Bhote Koshi, climbs through Bamboo and Rimche forest along the Langtang Khola with a steady uphill throughout, and arrives at the small settlement of Lama Hotel.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
The hardest part is the long steady climb. Start early and carry enough water. Langur monkeys and other forest wildlife are sometimes seen.
Common questions
- Is this a hard day? It is a long first day with a steady climb, but the trail is mostly forest.
- Is Lama Hotel a village? It is a small group of lodges in the forest.
Reverse direction
Walking Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
