The route
The route crosses a bridge and begins the famous stone staircase to Ulleri, thousands of steps long. The climb is steep and relentless but the views over the valley grow.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Take the steps slowly, with breaks. It is easier in the morning than after a heavy lunch.
Common questions
- How many steps are there? Thousands. The exact count is often debated.
- Is Ulleri a good stop? Yes. It is a Magar village with views.
Reverse direction
Walking Ulleri to Tikhedhunga is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
