The route
Above Dovan the forest begins to thin. The trail climbs steadily through bamboo and rhododendron, crosses a few streams and reaches the small settlement named Himalaya on a ridge.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
This is a short day on most plans. Use the time to rest, drink water and watch for headaches as the altitude starts to matter above 3,000 m.
Common questions
- Is Himalaya a village? It is a small cluster of lodges on the trail rather than a village with a bazaar.
- Can I skip Himalaya? Some groups go straight to Deurali, but the day is long. Ask your guide about the plan.
Reverse direction
Walking Himalaya to Dovan is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
