The route
From Chhomrong the trail drops to the river, climbs to Sinuwa, then continues through Kuldi and Bamboo in bamboo and rhododendron forest before reaching Dovan. It is mostly steps and forest trail with several ups and downs.
Altitude and health
This section stays below about 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is unlikely, though heat, humidity and fatigue still matter. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Check each tea house for room before pushing on, and keep water and a rain layer handy, because the forest is damp. Leeches can appear in the wet season.
Common questions
- How long is Chhomrong to Dovan? Most trekkers need 5 to 7 hours of walking, including stops. Fast groups can do it quicker.
- Where do people stop in between? Sinuwa, Kuldi and Bamboo all have simple lodges, and Dovan is the usual end of the day.
Reverse direction
Walking Dovan to Chhomrong is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
