The route
The trail drops through Jharkot and Kagbeni, then follows the wide, windy Kali Gandaki riverbed to Jomsom. A road now covers the same route.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Wind builds through the day, so start early. See the Kagbeni guide.
Common questions
- Is there a road? Yes, jeeps and buses run between Muktinath and Jomsom.
- Is the wind a problem? Yes, especially in the afternoon, so an early start helps.
Reverse direction
Walking Jomsom to Muktinath is the same trail in reverse and means a net climb, so allow more time than the walk down and set a slower pace.
