The route
A steep climb from Phedi to High Camp, then a long, exposed ascent to the prayer flags on the pass. Starts in the dark, typically between 3 and 5 am, to cross before the wind rises.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
Cold and wind are the main hazards. Wear warm layers and carry water, though it may freeze. See the Thorong La Pass guides.
Common questions
- How long does the climb take? Around 4 to 5 hours from Phedi, but it varies with fitness and snow.
- When should I start? Very early, usually before 5 am.
Reverse direction
Walking Thorong La Pass to Thorong Phedi is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
