The route
A steady climb above Ledar through open, rocky slopes, with a narrow section across a steep scree slope before Thorong Phedi, a small cluster of lodges at the foot of the pass.
Altitude and health
Part of this section is at or above 3,000 m, so altitude sickness is possible. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and tell your guide about headaches, nausea or poor sleep. Descend if symptoms worsen. Altitudes vary by a few tens of metres between maps and guidebooks.
Tips
The scree section can be exposed in wind or snow. Walk carefully and check conditions in advance.
Common questions
- Is Phedi the last stop before the pass? No, there is also High Camp above, a few hundred metres higher.
- Should I stay at Phedi or High Camp? Phedi is lower for sleeping. High Camp shortens pass day.
Reverse direction
Walking Thorong Phedi to Yak Kharka is the same trail in reverse. It is usually quicker because it is mostly downhill, but a long descent is hard on the knees, so poles help.
